Nestled along South Africa’s world-famous Garden Route in the Western Cape, Knysna is a coastal town celebrated for its breathtaking scenery, ancient forests, and relaxed yet adventurous lifestyle. Situated just 60 km east of George and 33 km west of Plettenberg Bay along the N2, Knysna offers visitors a sublime balance of nature, culture, adventure, and leisure.

With its welcoming community, iconic lagoon, and dramatic sandstone cliffs, Knysna is one of the Garden Route’s most beloved destinations.

A Rich History Rooted in Forests & Trade

Knysna’s story began long before modern settlement, with indigenous communities making use of the region’s rich natural resources. Dutch farmers arrived in the 1770s, but it was George Rex who is regarded as the town’s founder after acquiring land in 1804.

Rex established the timber trade using the lagoon as a natural harbour and founded Melville as a government settlement. During the 19th century, Knysna prospered through timber exports and experienced a brief gold rush in the 1880s. In 1881, Melville and Newhaven merged to form the town of Knysna, later shaped by influential timber families such as the Thesens and Parkes.

From Timber Town to Tourism Jewel

Extensive logging eventually threatened Knysna’s indigenous forests, leading to conservation measures and the creation of what is now the Garden Route National Park. Today, these protected forests are home to remarkable biodiversity and, according to SANParks, the last free-roaming forest elephants in the region.

Knysna has since evolved into a thriving tourism hub, famous for its lagoon, oysters, outdoor activities, and annual Knysna Oyster Festival, one of South Africa’s most popular sporting and lifestyle events.
