A honeybee finding a rewarding patch of flowers has useful information to share. Back at the hive, she can pass that discovery on through a remarkable set of movements: a dance that tells other bees where to go.
It is called the waggle dance, and understanding it changes the way you look at an insect you might otherwise barely notice.
A MESSAGE WRITTEN IN MOVEMENT
During the dance, a honeybee moves through a roughly figure-eight pattern. The central section, where she moves forward while shaking her body, is known as the waggle run.
This movement carries information about the direction and distance of a resource.
On the vertical honeycomb, the angle of the waggle run relative to straight up represents the direction of the food relative to the Sun.
A run pointing straight upwards indicates a flight towards the Sun’s position on the horizon. A run angled to one side communicates a corresponding angle away from that direction.
The duration of the waggle run provides information about distance: a longer run generally signals a longer journey.
Imagine giving someone directions without speaking, pointing down a road or drawing a map. A honeybee accomplishes something comparable through the orientation and timing of her movements.
EVEN BEES BENEFIT FROM EXPERIENCE
The dance becomes more fascinating when we look at how bees develop it.
A study published in Science in 2023 found that young honeybees performed more accurate dances when they had opportunities to follow experienced dancers before making their own first attempts.
Researchers created experimental colonies in which young bees lacked that early exposure. Those bees still danced, but their movements were more disordered, and their distance signals were less accurate.
Some aspects improved with experience. However, the bees that missed early learning continued to communicate distance differently throughout their lives.
The findings show that social learning helps shape this communication. The behaviour has an inherited foundation, but experience matters too.
SCIENTISTS CAN READ THE DIRECTIONS
The messages are useful beyond the hive.
Researchers at the University of Sussex have used observation hives and video recordings to decode dances and investigate where honeybees forage.
By studying those movements, scientists can identify areas the bees find rewarding and examine how their foraging changes across seasons.
A small movement inside a hive can therefore reveal something about the landscape outside it.
A DIFFERENT WAY TO SEE A GARDEN VISITOR
The next time a honeybee pauses on a flower, consider the possibility that her discovery may become information shared back at the colony.
That brief visit belongs to a much larger story of searching, navigating and communicating.
You do not need to open a hive to appreciate it. Simply knowing that this exchange takes place adds another layer of interest to an ordinary moment in the garden.

Every business has a story. We’re creating more room for yours.
We are in the final stages of preparing to introduce the newly upgraded home of Trustoria, our news and information platform, and we’re excited about what this next chapter will mean for our readers and the businesses we help bring into view.
At the heart of this major upgrade is a clear purpose: to strengthen our partnership with Mysatech and support the expansion of their marketing initiative, creating more opportunities for verified businesses to be discovered and recognised.
As part of that commitment, we will formally list all verified businesses within the Mysatech network on the Trustoria platform. We want to shine a light on who these businesses are, what they offer and the people behind them, giving our readers the opportunity to discover companies they might otherwise never have come across.
Behind every business is someone putting in the hours, building something they believe in and working hard to earn their customers’ trust. Those efforts deserve visibility. Through our partnership with Mysatech, we’re making that an important part of Trustoria’s future.
If your business has not yet joined the Mysatech marketing initiative, now is the time to pay attention. As the network expands and partner platforms introduce new opportunities for exposure, being part of it gives your business more places to be seen. Staying on the sidelines could mean missing valuable opportunities to reach people who are looking for exactly what you offer.
We’re putting the finishing touches on a platform we cannot wait to share with you. A new home for Trustoria, a stronger partnership and more space for verified businesses to tell their stories.
Follow Trustoria for the reveal, and speak to Mysatech about getting your business involved.
Your business has a story worth sharing. Let’s help more people discover it.

Big changes are coming to Trustoria.
Trustoria is already a fully operational news and information platform, but we have been working on something much bigger — a complete upgrade designed to take the platform into its next chapter.
This is not simply a new look.
We are refining the way information is presented, how stories are discovered, how trusted content is organised and how people interact with the platform as a whole. The goal is to create a smarter, cleaner and more advanced news environment that gives readers a better way to stay informed without being overwhelmed by noise.
Behind the scenes, the final touches are now being made to an upgraded Trustoria experience that will feel faster, stronger and far more connected.
We are keeping the core of what Trustoria stands for — credible information, responsible reporting and meaningful context — while building a platform capable of doing far more with it.
Very soon, we will be ready to show you what we have been working on.
And when the new Trustoria launches, it will not feel like a small update.
It will feel like a completely new way to experience the platform.
We cannot wait to share it with you.
