Discover Kleinmond: Where Fynbos, Mountains and Sea Unite

Nestled between the majestic Kogelberg Mountains and the sparkling waters of False Bay, Kleinmond, meaning "small mouth" in Afrikaans is one of the Western Cape's most picturesque coastal towns. Located about 90 km east of Cape Town, this charming seaside destination lies at the mouth of the Bot River Lagoon, where pristine beaches, fynbos-covered mountains, and tranquil wetlands combine to create an unforgettable escape.

As part of the internationally recognised Kogelberg Biosphere Reserve, it is one of the finest places to experience the incredible biodiversity of the Cape Floral Kingdom.

A Town with Ancient Roots

The Kleinmond area has been home to people for thousands of years. Archaeological discoveries near Hangklip reveal evidence of Stone Age communities dating back more than 20,000 years, while the Strandlopers and Khoekhoe later lived along the coastline, leaving behind ancient shell middens and fish traps.

During the mid-1800s, farmers from Caledon and Elgin began spending their summers camping beside the Bot River Lagoon. Around the same time, a small fishing community settled at Jogensklip, laying the foundations for today's harbour.

Modern Kleinmond began to develop after the Kaplan brothers purchased Lamloch Farm in 1910. Permanent holiday homes increased during the 1940s, followed by new roads, public buildings, and improved infrastructure that transformed the village into one of the Cape Whale Coast's favourite holiday destinations.

Today, Kleinmond remains a popular seaside retreat, retirement destination, and gateway to the natural wonders of the Overberg.
