  • FROM WATERMELON FARMS TO FOURWAYS

It’s hard to imagine when you’re sitting in Fourways traffic today, but less than a century ago, much of the area around us was open countryside.

And the story of how Fourways became Fourways is a fascinating one.

In 1935, Ernst and Ethel Eriksen travelled north from Johannesburg looking for land on which to build a home. They found part of the old Witkoppen farm, where the Van der Walt brothers were farming watermelons and Friesian cattle.

Ethel reportedly fell in love with the views towards the Magaliesberg and the sunsets. Ernst initially bought 423 acres, with the property later growing to around 605 acres.

They called their home Norscot, a name combining Norway and Scotland, reflecting the family’s Norwegian and Scottish connections.

Construction began in 1936, and Norscot eventually became an extraordinary country residence with eight reception rooms, six bedrooms and five bathrooms.

At the time, this really was the countryside.

Even into the 1950s, the area was considered well outside Johannesburg, and accounts of Fourways in the 1970s still describe working farms, open fields and dairy cattle being walked down to the Jukskei River.

SO WHERE DID “FOURWAYS” COME FROM?

The name developed around the four-way stop at Witkoppen Road and what was then William Nicol Drive, now Winnie Mandela Drive.

That simple rural intersection would eventually become the centre of one of Johannesburg’s busiest commercial and residential areas.

    The transformation happened remarkably quickly.

    Fourways Mall arrived in 1994.

Montecasino opened in 2000, bringing a massive new entertainment development to the same Witkoppen intersection.

Farms and open land steadily gave way to homes, shopping centres, schools, restaurants, offices and the Fourways we recognise today.

And remarkably, one piece of that earlier Fourways is still here.

Norscot Manor survives today as part of the Norscot Manor Recreation Centre, giving us a physical link to a time when this corner of Johannesburg looked very different.

So next time you’re crawling along Witkoppen, spare a thought for the watermelons, Friesian cattle and country estates that came before us.

Fourways has changed a lot in less than 100 years.

What part of its history should we dig into next?

  • Something new is getting ready to step into the spotlight.

    Streemo is coming soon.

But this is not about creating another video platform filled with endless uploads, copied content and feeds so crowded that great creators disappear before people ever get the chance to discover them.

    Streemo is being built differently.

The idea is simple: create a cleaner, more focused home for original and curated video content, where creators can showcase their channels, their work and their identity without being drowned out by noise.

We want viewers to be able to open Streemo and actually enjoy discovering something new.

A creator they have never seen before.
    A local channel worth following.
    A series worth watching.
A business with something interesting to share.
A story that deserves an audience.

And for creators, Streemo is being designed as more than just another place to upload a video.

It will be a space where your channel can be presented properly, where your content can be organised, discovered and appreciated for what it is — your work.

No chasing duplicate copies of somebody else’s creation.
No building the platform around clutter for the sake of volume.
No pretending that more content automatically means better content.

We want Streemo to be about quality, originality and discovery.

There is still a lot happening behind the scenes, and we are carefully building the platform into something we believe creators and viewers will genuinely enjoy using.

    This is only the beginning.

    Very soon, the screen changes.

    Streemo — Stream. Create. Connect.

  • There is something special about an item that has been made by hand.

It is not rushed. It is not mass produced. It is created stitch by stitch, with time, patience and real care — and that is exactly what makes Woolens different.

These beautiful handmade baby sets are a perfect example of the kind of work that goes into every Woolens creation. From the carefully finished beanies to the tiny matching booties, every detail has been made with love and with the intention of creating something that feels just as special as the little person who will wear it.

And that is what Woolens is really about.

Creating pieces that are warm, personal and meaningful. Something you can give as a gift, keep as a memory, or have specially made in the colours and style you love.

Sometimes the most beautiful things are still the ones made slowly, carefully and by hand.

  • The World Bank Group has advanced a new $1.5 billion (nearly R25 billion) Development Policy Loan to South Africa to support economic reforms that are expected to create almost 600,000 jobs by 2032.

This is the fourth Development Policy Loan South Africa has secured from the global financial institution since 2022.

It is the first that supports reforms in the water and sanitation sector. It also adds further support for electricity and freight transport reforms.

"This programme reflects our government's determination to remove the infrastructure constraints that have held back growth and job creation for too long," said Finance Minister Enoch Godongwana in a statement.

"Working with the World Bank Group, we are deepening reforms already delivering results in energy and transport, while for the first time tackling the governance and investment gaps in our water sector that affect millions of households, particularly the poorest."

Since 2020, the government has implemented a series of economic reforms dubbed Operation Vulindlela.

According to the World Bank, results include the virtual end of load shedding, a sixfold increase in renewable energy investments and a 50% rise in rail and port freight volumes since 2023.

The loan has a 15-year maturity, a three-year grace period and an interest rate of the six-month Secured Overnight Financing Rate (SOFR) plus 1.35%, National Treasury said.

It added that the terms are concessional, enabling the government to stabilise debt-servicing costs associated with expensive market borrowing.
