  • FROM WATERMELON FARMS TO FOURWAYS

It’s hard to imagine when you’re sitting in Fourways traffic today, but less than a century ago, much of the area around us was open countryside.

And the story of how Fourways became Fourways is a fascinating one.

In 1935, Ernst and Ethel Eriksen travelled north from Johannesburg looking for land on which to build a home. They found part of the old Witkoppen farm, where the Van der Walt brothers were farming watermelons and Friesian cattle.

Ethel reportedly fell in love with the views towards the Magaliesberg and the sunsets. Ernst initially bought 423 acres, with the property later growing to around 605 acres.

They called their home Norscot, a name combining Norway and Scotland, reflecting the family’s Norwegian and Scottish connections.

Construction began in 1936, and Norscot eventually became an extraordinary country residence with eight reception rooms, six bedrooms and five bathrooms.

At the time, this really was the countryside.

Even into the 1950s, the area was considered well outside Johannesburg, and accounts of Fourways in the 1970s still describe working farms, open fields and dairy cattle being walked down to the Jukskei River.

SO WHERE DID “FOURWAYS” COME FROM?

The name developed around the four-way stop at Witkoppen Road and what was then William Nicol Drive, now Winnie Mandela Drive.

That simple rural intersection would eventually become the centre of one of Johannesburg’s busiest commercial and residential areas.

    The transformation happened remarkably quickly.

    Fourways Mall arrived in 1994.

Montecasino opened in 2000, bringing a massive new entertainment development to the same Witkoppen intersection.

Farms and open land steadily gave way to homes, shopping centres, schools, restaurants, offices and the Fourways we recognise today.

And remarkably, one piece of that earlier Fourways is still here.

Norscot Manor survives today as part of the Norscot Manor Recreation Centre, giving us a physical link to a time when this corner of Johannesburg looked very different.

So next time you’re crawling along Witkoppen, spare a thought for the watermelons, Friesian cattle and country estates that came before us.

Fourways has changed a lot in less than 100 years.

What part of its history should we dig into next?

  • A honeybee finding a rewarding patch of flowers has useful information to share. Back at the hive, she can pass that discovery on through a remarkable set of movements: a dance that tells other bees where to go.

It is called the waggle dance, and understanding it changes the way you look at an insect you might otherwise barely notice.

    A MESSAGE WRITTEN IN MOVEMENT

During the dance, a honeybee moves through a roughly figure-eight pattern. The central section, where she moves forward while shaking her body, is known as the waggle run.

This movement carries information about the direction and distance of a resource.

On the vertical honeycomb, the angle of the waggle run relative to straight up represents the direction of the food relative to the Sun.

A run pointing straight upwards indicates a flight towards the Sun’s position on the horizon. A run angled to one side communicates a corresponding angle away from that direction.

The duration of the waggle run provides information about distance: a longer run generally signals a longer journey.

Imagine giving someone directions without speaking, pointing down a road or drawing a map. A honeybee accomplishes something comparable through the orientation and timing of her movements.

    EVEN BEES BENEFIT FROM EXPERIENCE

The dance becomes more fascinating when we look at how bees develop it.

A study published in Science in 2023 found that young honeybees performed more accurate dances when they had opportunities to follow experienced dancers before making their own first attempts.

Researchers created experimental colonies in which young bees lacked that early exposure. Those bees still danced, but their movements were more disordered, and their distance signals were less accurate.

Some aspects improved with experience. However, the bees that missed early learning continued to communicate distance differently throughout their lives.

The findings show that social learning helps shape this communication. The behaviour has an inherited foundation, but experience matters too.

    SCIENTISTS CAN READ THE DIRECTIONS

The messages are useful beyond the hive.

Researchers at the University of Sussex have used observation hives and video recordings to decode dances and investigate where honeybees forage.

By studying those movements, scientists can identify areas the bees find rewarding and examine how their foraging changes across seasons.

A small movement inside a hive can therefore reveal something about the landscape outside it.

A DIFFERENT WAY TO SEE A GARDEN VISITOR

The next time a honeybee pauses on a flower, consider the possibility that her discovery may become information shared back at the colony.

That brief visit belongs to a much larger story of searching, navigating and communicating.

You do not need to open a hive to appreciate it. Simply knowing that this exchange takes place adds another layer of interest to an ordinary moment in the garden.

  • Property is never just property.

It can be the first home you finally call your own.
It can be the rental that gives your family a fresh start.
It can be the office where a business begins to grow.
It can be the investment that changes what the future looks like.

That is the thinking behind eProp24 International.

We are building a modern property platform designed to make it easier for people to discover, explore and connect with real opportunities — whether they are buying, renting, selling, investing or simply searching for what comes next.

For us, this is not about filling a website with listings.

It is about creating a professional space where property owners, agents, developers, buyers, tenants and investors can meet around one thing that matters: the right opportunity at the right time.

From residential homes and rentals to commercial property, land and investment opportunities, eProp24 International is being developed to give property a better place to be seen — and people a better way to find it.

We know that every listing represents something important to someone.

Behind every “For Sale” sign is a decision.
Behind every rental is a new chapter.
Behind every development is a vision.
Behind every investment is a plan for the future.

That is why we want eProp24 International to feel different — professional, accessible, modern and built around real people making real property decisions.

And this is only the beginning.

As the platform continues to grow, so will the opportunities available to the people and businesses who become part of it.

    Find. Explore. Own. Invest.
