  • From a Safe Place to a Growing Harvest: Hope Takes Root in Limpopo

In Maphosa Village, Limpopo, one woman’s concern for children after school grew into something that now supports families in more ways than one: a safe place for children, help with their learning and meals to share — alongside a community farming project creating jobs.

Johanna Mailula founded the Maphosa Drop-in Centre in 2016 after seeing children spending afternoons without adult supervision. A report published by SAnews on 2 September 2026 says the centre now supports 68 vulnerable children.

Over time, the initiative has grown beyond its original purpose. Alongside care for children, it is helping address some of the pressures facing local families, including unemployment and food insecurity.

CARE THAT GROWS WITH THE COMMUNITY

The centre provides children with homework assistance, psychosocial support, educational enrichment, life-skills development and nutritious meals.

Those everyday forms of support can make a real difference. A place to go after school, someone ready to help with homework and a meal at the end of the day can give a child more space to feel safe, learn and look ahead.

    FROM SUPPORT TO SUSTAINABLE WORK

Recognising how closely children’s wellbeing is connected to their families’ circumstances, the organisation expanded into agriculture.

The farming project now creates 17 permanent jobs, as well as seasonal and volunteer opportunities. Its vegetables attract customers from across Limpopo, and the Traditional Council has allocated five hectares of land to support future growth.

The centre’s progress shows how one community initiative can respond to needs that are linked: caring for children, improving access to food and creating ways for people to earn an income.

A PARTNERSHIP TO HELP THE HARVEST GROW

In 2026, support facilitated by the National Development Agency helped the centre partner with The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

The partnership provided R1.3 million for the Green Harvest Project. The funding strengthened the centre’s farming capacity through irrigation, boreholes, water storage, fencing and shade-net structures, alongside seedling production and crop cultivation.

Training and mentorship are also helping the organisation build its food production and market access. Mailula hopes to grow the project further and reach markets beyond South Africa.

A VISION THAT STARTED CLOSE TO HOME

The Maphosa Drop-in Centre began with a simple but powerful response to what was happening in the community: children needed a safe place and caring support after school.

Today, that commitment reaches further — helping children, creating work and laying foundations for more sustainable livelihoods.

Sometimes, lasting change begins when someone notices what their neighbours need — and decides to start.

  • There is something special about finding a place where you can walk in, switch off for a little while, and know you are in good hands.

That is what Salon Suzette has been creating for the Strand community since 2008.

For years, clients have trusted us for professional nail and beauty treatments, personalised care, and an environment where beauty is not about pressure or perfection — it is about taking time for yourself and feeling good in your own skin.

At Salon Suzette, every appointment matters.

Whether you are coming in for your nails, a beauty treatment, professional skincare, or exploring one of our more advanced services such as CO₂ skin resurfacing laser treatments, our approach remains the same:

Listen. Care. Treat every client as an individual.

We are proud to offer a combination of traditional beauty services and modern treatment options, together with professional skincare products, including the Kalahari range, so that our clients can continue caring for their skin beyond the salon too.

But more than the treatments, it is the people who have shaped Salon Suzette.

    The familiar faces.
    The conversations.
The clients who have supported us for years.
The new clients who walk through our doors for the first time.
The moments before a special occasion.
And the simple appointments that become a little piece of self-care in a busy week.

That is why we do what we do.

If you are looking for a beauty salon in Strand where professionalism and personal service still matter, we would love to welcome you.

Come visit Salon Suzette, discover our treatments, ask us questions, and give yourself a little time to feel looked after.

Because sometimes self-care is not a luxury.

Sometimes it is simply the reminder that you deserve a little time for yourself too.

  • Sometimes a new chapter doesn’t begin with a perfect plan.

Sometimes it begins with a question.

“Could there be something more for me?”

That question is a big part of why Legacy met Madelaine exists.

This page is not here to pretend that success happens overnight, or that one decision suddenly changes everything. Real growth takes time. It takes learning, consistency, courage, and sometimes simply being willing to look at possibilities you may not have considered before.

For me, this journey is about building something meaningful. Something that can grow over time. Something that can teach you new skills, introduce you to new people, and perhaps open doors you did not know were there.

And I know I’m not the only person who has ever wanted that.

Maybe you’re a mom looking for something of your own.

Maybe you already have a full-time job but want to explore an additional opportunity.

    Maybe you’re starting over.

    Maybe you’re simply curious.

Whatever brought you here, you are welcome.

Over the coming weeks I’ll be sharing more about the journey, what I’m learning, the opportunities I’m exploring, the people I meet along the way, and the real work that happens behind the scenes.

    Not just the highlights.

    The journey.

If that sounds like something you’d like to follow, please like and follow the Legacy met Madelaine page.

And if you would rather have a private conversation, send me a message. Ask questions. Find out more. There is no pressure to make a decision before you understand what it is all about.

Perhaps this page simply gives you a little inspiration.

Perhaps it introduces you to something new.

Or perhaps one day you’ll look back and realise this was where your own journey started.

Whatever happens next, I’m excited to build it one step at a time — and I’d love to have you along for the journey.

    Bou jou Legacy.

  • Did you Know?

It may actually rain diamonds on Jupiter and Saturn

Scientists believe that powerful lightning storms in the methane-rich atmospheres of Jupiter and Saturn break apart methane molecules, creating tiny particles of carbon soot. As these particles sink deeper into the planets, they encounter crushing pressures and scorching temperatures that transform them into solid diamond crystals.

These sparkling diamonds are thought to fall through the atmosphere like glittering hailstones before the extreme heat deep within the planets melts them into liquid carbon. While no spacecraft has witnessed this incredible phenomenon firsthand, current scientific models suggest that diamond rain is a real possibility on these giant worlds.

  • 🌟 Monday Motivation

A child who struggles to read is not a child who cannot learn.

Many children simply need the right tools and guidance to unlock their potential.

When children develop strong reading skills, homework becomes easier, studying becomes less stressful, and learning becomes more enjoyable.

Most importantly, they begin to believe in themselves.

This week, choose encouragement over pressure. Growth happens when children know they are supported and capable.

Every reader starts somewhere. Every reader can improve.

💙 Keep believing in your child.
