Discover Paternoster: A Timeless West Coast Gem
Along South Africa’s rugged West Coast, lie Paternoster a picturesque fishing village located about 15 km north-west of Vredenburg and 145 km north of Cape Town, at Cape Columbine between Saldanha Bay and St Helena Bay.
Renowned for its fresh lobster and authentic coastal charm, Paternoster is the oldest coastal town on the West Coast, offering visitors a rare glimpse into a simpler seaside way of life.
White-washed cottages sit quietly behind a pristine stretch of white sandy beach, where the rhythm of the ocean and the working harbour define daily life.

A Rich History Rooted in the Sea
Established during the 17th–18th centuries, Paternoster’s name comes from the Latin Pater Noster, meaning “Our Father.” Folklore tells that Portuguese sailors gave the village its name after praying in gratitude for surviving shipwrecks along this treacherous coastline.
Long before European settlement, the area was home to San hunter-gatherers for thousands of years. Evidence of their ancient presence can still be found today in shell middens dating back 3,000–4,000 years, making Paternoster a place where deep history meets living tradition.
Paternoster’s lobster industry was thriving, by 1902 with lobster being canned and exported—especially to France. In the 1930s, the first Redro factory was established in the village. Developed by the Stephan family, Redro fish paste was created to compete with Britain’s popular Peck’s Anchovette, adding another chapter to Paternoster’s rich fishing heritage.
