The Electrician Who Saved a Life: Why Tradesmen Should Carry Defibrillators

“Did you by any chance save somebody’s life in Bedford Street the other day?”

That’s not a message most people expect to receive. But for Dale Lee, an electrician from Northern Ireland, the answer was simple:

Yes.

The man who sent the message was Jonathan Burns, a stranger whose life Dale had saved just weeks earlier after Jonathan collapsed in the street from a sudden cardiac arrest.

What followed was not only a story of quick thinking and courage, but a powerful reminder that ordinary people can become lifesavers.

A Normal Day That Nearly Turned Tragic

Jonathan Burns had started his day like any other. On his way to work in April, he began feeling pain in his back, chest, and arms. Soon after, nausea set in.

Like many people do, Jonathan brushed it off.

“I very foolishly put it down to coming down with a cold and completely ignored the symptoms,” he later said.

But the pain didn’t go away. That afternoon, just minutes after leaving work, Jonathan collapsed on Bedford Street. He had gone into cardiac arrest.

He remembers nothing of the walk there.

What he didn’t know was that help was already on the way.

Right Place, Right Time, Right Equipment

Dale Lee had just completed an advanced first aid course six months earlier. Inspired by learning about mobile defibrillators, and motivated by a family member’s heart attack, he decided to keep one in his work van.

That decision would soon prove life-changing.

Driving past Bedford Street, Dale spotted Jonathan lying on the pavement. He pulled over immediately.

“I checked for a heartbeat and couldn’t feel it,” Dale said.

He grabbed his defibrillator, attached the pads, and followed the machine’s voice instructions. The device guided him through chest compressions, rescue breaths, and delivered the shock that restarted Jonathan’s heart.

By the time paramedics arrived, Jonathan was alive.

One of them told Dale:
“You saved his life.”

Waking Up Alive

Jonathan remembers slowly hearing voices.

“I woke up lying on the ground with people looking down at me. At first I thought I was dreaming.”

He was rushed to the Royal Victoria Hospital, where doctors fitted a stent and began his recovery.

Later that evening, Dale was still in shock.

“I kept worrying if I had done the right thing,” he said.
“Then the paramedic rang to say Jonathan was OK. That was a massive relief.”

A Message That Changed Everything

The story could have ended there, but the paramedic slipped Dale’s business card into Jonathan’s hospital bag.

After his discharge, Jonathan sent a message:

“Did you by any chance save somebody’s life in Bedford Street the other day?”

It turned out the two men were close neighbours. They later met for coffee.

“If I had stayed longer at work, we would have missed each other,” Jonathan said.
“And I would have been dead. I’m incredibly lucky to be alive.”

Why Dale Wants More Tradesmen to Carry Defibrillators

Now, Dale is urging other tradespeople to follow his lead.

“Tradesmen are out and about in people’s houses and on the streets every day,” he says.
“We’re often in the right place when something goes wrong.”

According to the British Heart Foundation, anyone can use a defibrillator, even without training. The device speaks to the user, checks the heart rhythm, and only delivers a shock if needed.

In other words: you don’t have to be a doctor to save a life.

Final Thoughts

Dale Lee didn’t set out to be a hero. He simply took a first aid course, made a smart decision, and was brave enough to act.

That one choice gave Jonathan Burns another chance at life.

This story is a powerful reminder that:

  • Cardiac arrest can happen anywhere
  • Fast action saves lives
  • Ordinary people can do extraordinary things

Sometimes, being prepared is all it takes to become someone’s miracle.
