Makhanda, formerly Grahamstown, is a historic Eastern Cape town known as the “City of Saints” for its many churches and as a vibrant creative hub that hosts the annual National Arts Festival.

About 130 km from Gqeberha, it is home to Rhodes University.

Despite its rich cultural heritage, the town currently faces significant service delivery challenges, including water shortages and deteriorating infrastructure.

    Makhanda, also known as Grahamstown, is a town of about 140,000 people in the Eastern Cape province of South Africa. It is situated about 110 kilometres northeast of Gqeberha and 130 kilometres southwest of East London. It is the largest town in the Makana Local Municipality, and the seat of the municipal council.
