Tucked into the rolling highlands of Mpumalanga, Machadodorp, officially known as eNtokozweni, meaning “place of happiness” — a fitting description for a village that blends heritage with calm, natural beauty.

Machadodorp’s greatest gift is its tranquillity.  Quiet streets, friendly locals, and rustic charm make it an ideal destination to slow down, breathe deeply, and reconnect with nature.

Just a scenic drive from Johannesburg and Pretoria along the N4, this peaceful town offers a refreshing escape filled with mountain air, flowing rivers, a preserved historic town offering genuine cultural depth and natural beauty.

A Brief History of Machadodorp

Machadodorp’s story begins as the farm Geluk, long before it developed into an important railway town. Its transformation came with the construction of the Pretoria–Delagoa Bay railway line, when the settlement was renamed Machadodorp in honour of Major Joachim Machado, the Portuguese engineer who surveyed the route.

The town entered the national spotlight during the Anglo-Boer War (1899–1902). As British forces advanced, President Paul Kruger and the Transvaal government operated from a railway carriage stationed in Machadodorp, effectively making it a temporary capital of the Zuid-Afrikaansche Republiek. This unusual chapter gave the town lasting historical significance.
